Oil Massage – A Powerful Way to Reduce Stress

According to Ayurveda, oil massage should form an integral part of our daily routine. Not only does it dissolve and eliminate accumulated stress and toxins, it also offers a host of benefits such as:

  • Relieve fatigue and improve stamina
  • Facilitate better sleep
  • Improve complexion of skin
  • Nourish tissues
  • Improve circulation
  • Lubricate joints
  • Calm the nerves
  • Help effective elimination of toxins

The type of oil you choose for the massage also plays an important role. Hot body people will generally benefit from cool oils like Coconut oil. Whereas those with cold body will benefit greatly from heavier oils like Sesame or Olive oil. If you intend to use Sesame oil, look for organic, cold-pressed oil. It is also necessary to cure it before use. Just heat the oil once to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the temperature is reached, you can cool the oil and store it. DO NOT heat the oil directly over the flame. Use a double boiler.

Herbalized massage oils are also available in which carefully chosen herbs are added to enhance the benefits. Some even advocate addition of aromatherapy oils for still greater benefits. A qualified herbalist or an ayurvedic physician will be in a better position to prescribe the right oil for your constitution. However, the lack of an herbalist or an ayurvedic physician in your area should not be an excuse for you to postpone this heavenly ritual. You can safely start with Coconut or Sesame oil in which few drops of your favorite essential oil has been added.

How to Do it?

Warm the oil a bit by placing the oil container in warm water before applying on your body. This facilitates better absorption. Dip your finger tips in the oil and apply all over the body. Once you are done, slowly massage your entire body, part by part, with your fingers and palm. Use circular motion for your chest, abdomen and joints and straight strokes for your arms and legs. Be fully aware of the body part you are massaging. Imagine all the tension and stress getting dissolved in the oil. Spend more time on your ears, soles and palms. There are vital reflexology points in these areas. It is said that even if you don’t get time for a full body massage, a good oil massage to your soles can deliver equivalent benefits. Wait for about half an hour for the oil to get absorbed by your body. Follow up with a warm shower.

You don’t have to wait for weeks to experience the amazing benefits of an oil massage. You can feel it immediately after your bath. Just try and feel it!
