Check Self-Defeating Behaviours

The path towards success starts with changing yourself. A positive attitude where you believe that you can achieve what you set out to is essential. One of the key things that keep you from attaining that evasive self-confidence is self-defeating or self-destructive behavior. These behaviors have probably become so ingrained in your personality that they become difficult to recognize as debilitating ones.

There is therefore, this need to introspect and examine each action of yours and question the reasons behind each. An objective journey inside your own mind is not likely to be an easy one and there are likely to be many instances where your mind will play tricks. What you need to do is to concentrate to be able to listen to your conscience and inner dialogue. An objective approach is essential to be able to see through the layers that your own mind has created around you. Openness to accepting and learning new aspects about your own self is another key criterion to be able to traverse this path.

It takes courage to accept that you yourself could have been one of the causes that has kept you for attaining success. Only after you have been able to change your own beliefs and behavior shall you be able to change and influence the opinions of other people. This change shall involve overcoming all the obstacles that you face in trying to change set behavior that has taken strong roots in your personality.

A few things that you can start to do to ensure that your behavior is not self-defeating are

  • To start with you need to accept and internalize that you are at cross roads in your life and that where you go from here depends on you and you alone. This enables you to take onus for every action that you undertake, making you evaluate each action that you perform.
  • Be conscious of the fact that you are making the right choices to change your self damaging and weakening behavior.
  • Pay attention to your thoughts. This may be difficult to do initially and so you might want to actually write down your thoughts and feelings to concretize them. Keep a track on how well you are being able to execute your decision to avoid self-defeating behavior. Notice the consequences that occur as a result of positive actions. This will reinforce your will to continue the effort.
  • Evaluate each action of yours by preparing a cross checking list of the possible outcomes. Is your behavior likely to lead to gratifying results or is it likely to take you on a path that leads to unhappiness? Though there are some that will exalt the virtues of pain and suffering, a constant dose of these shall only make you a bitter person and never allow you to become successful.
