Creating a Positive Attitude for Success

There have been many discussions on the definition of success. For some, success can only be measured in monetary terms and for others it is a barometer for happiness. It means different things to different people. In fact, one cannot delineate success unless all the major aspects of life are considered. Think for yourself! Can an extremely rich person who has no friends, be termed as successful? Can a congenial person with a healthy family but no money to feed them be considered successful? I am sure that you now appreciate that success needs to be holistic in nature.

Some of the main areas that are extremely important in determining success are those pertaining to relationships, business, health and security. A healthy atmosphere at home and knowing that you are loved infuses peace of mind that contributes to the overall feeling of well being. The security of knowing that you are loved, trusted and wanted goes a long way in contributing to overall success.

One of the most common debates that one ends up in pertains to the extent to which financial success determines the overall definition. Money may not be the most important thing in life (though I am tempted to say that it is, at times!), but it is an essential and pertinent component of the overall framework. A person who denies that he does not like material things like cars, houses, jazzy techno stuff, vacations is either lying or has attained spirituality. The basic idea is to ‘not be poor’. The catch comes in when you have to decide ‘how much’ is enough to be deemed as ‘okay’!

Overall success therefore means success with family, friends, finances and oneself. It should essentially result in a state of peace of mind. And that probably is the only way to measure success. It cannot be evaluated based on the number of friends or the bank balance or the number of cars that you own.

Once you understand the holistic concept of success, the question that pops up in the mind is ‘How can then one achieve this balanced, holistic success?’ The process starts with you! Achieving balanced success starts with developing the right mental attitude.

The route to the top is seamless once you have the self confidence that you can do it. It does not matter what it is that you are trying to do. It could be trying to be more patient with your 4 year old son or cracking a promotion at work or closing a deal.

Keep some points in mind while trying to develop a positive ‘can do’ attitude.

  • When it comes to inter personal relationships, accept the individual as they are. Learn to forgive and forget, be supportive and respect the others persons perspective.
  • Be open to change! The world is changing fast and new technologies, therapies and techniques are being developed in each field. Unless you develop an insatiable desire to learn more and keep up with the times, you are likely to be left behind in the professional rat-race.
  • Having a positive attitude is only the start of a paved way to success. Don’t forget that it still requires you to plan, strategize and take action.
